Guess Who Is On Top?

For those of you who are 'new' to Louisiana Catahoulas, I am sharing this to hopefully prepare you for what you are getting yourself into, and so you know, it is not just me, and my dogs!

Above and below is a pit bull vested and ready for hog hunting as 'the catch dog'.

These pitbull catch dogs are part of a 'team' in hog hunting and must be raised with the Catahoula curs so they can travel in close quarters together and don't fight with each other.

20 years ago, I sold my pick of the litter to someone as a family pet with the condition that I could always come back and breed to the dog. To make a long story short, instead of returning 'my' pup, they had the dog euthanized @ 6 months because they claimed it was 'too aggressive'. Unfortunately for me and the pup, they completely forgot that I sold the dog on condition 'that I could ALWAYS come back and beed to it', and failed to understand that 'self defense' is NOT aggresion!

About 10 yrs ago, the street punks who fight pitbulls in my neighborhood found out the hard way that my curs win in fights with their dogs. Since then, I have had to be on guard about who I sell my dogs to because the punks now want to buy my pups to cross breed my Catahoula cur dogs bloodline over their pits.

I've been holding off on posting this, but I feel the need to share.

Last weekend a neighbor had a house guest, who brought a pit bull with them. I had Minnie outside for an early morning potty break when they let the pit bull out. The pit barks and then proceeds to run a half a block to my backyard. At this point I'm not sure if it was after me or my Cur pup, but I was scrambling trying to get my dog back in the house. I couldn't get to her in time. About halfway across my backyard the pit bull lunged at my pup. In the darkness it was hard to tell what was going on, but with the growling and wheezing mixed with the rustling leaves I knew it was a serious fight and my heart sank, I've just started working with my dog and getting her interested in squirrels and now I'm going to lose her right here in my backyard.

The neighbor's guest came running with his flashlight and starting screaming incoherently. As he turned his light to what I can only assume is going to be a bloody mess of what was left of my cur puppy, I couldn't believe what was happening.

My four month old, 35 pound, Ladner Cur was holding a 45-50 pound pit bull to the ground by the throat!! After I knew my dog was in control of the situation I knew I could get in there to help her. I proceeded to let the other fellow know that he and his dog were less than liked here and that he should make sure to keep his dog and his mouth under control. The pit bull and the house guest left later that morning.

We have young children and this situation could have been tragic if they had been in the yard. I can tell you that from now on, Minnie will always be with them when they go out.

I am happy to say that Ladner's Minnie Pearl came through the scuffle without a scratch! My wife is so proud of her, she bought her a new rope toy.

It's hard to believe a dog can be so gentle with our family and friends and still have the grit to protect us like she did.

OK, I confess, I am gonna miss these boys when they are gone...

I have 4 males, and IMHO the one below is a black and brown, although he looks solid black at the moment, he is turning and he is the great explorer along with the blue eyed one 'with too much white'. If you are looking for a tracking dog, the white one will be easier to see in the dark, and both he and the black one followed Rivers all the way to the gate last week(about 100 yards from da kennel).

So, why is the big boy above laying down? Because like his daddy, he always has his nose on the ground and is rolling! He is about to take a nap in the photo above...

In the photo above, with the white one is a red/brown leopard, and the same below alone.

People, look at the neck on this 14 year old dog!

Today, almost every dog in my yard is a descendant of Patch, the dog who showed me what a real Catahoula is all about. For about 10 years I tried to find a good cross for a great dog from the 90's, and was for the most part disappointed with everything I crossed him to because there is a lot of trash out there. Sorry, you can't breed a great dog with trash and expect a great outcome! That great dog was named Maurice and he was born on my houseboat in 1992 in the Atchafalaya Basin Swamp.

I bought Patch in 2004 when he was two years old at Uncle Earl's and waited two years to breed him. The first time I bred him was a cross with Ruby, a grand child of Maurice and every puppy, grand child and great grand child was to grow up to be magnificent. There were no culls after Patch!

Coco, Patch's daughter on the left and Simon a grandson out of Angel on the right grew up in that puppy pen attached to the bay pen.


It was with Patch, that I learned what a foundation bred dog can do genetically for my kennels overall performance.  Below is Angel out of Ruby and Patch with his grandchildren.

The Legend Wins High Point Dog and Best of the Best @ Uncle Earl's 2016

Every dog enters the ring with a perfect score and is judged on mistakes. 

Legend didn't make any.

 I don't know what he did in the one dog, two dog, and the old and young, @ Uncle Earl's 2016, but he won the High Point Dog and the Best of the Best! 

They don't call him 'Legend' for nuthin! Wow, watch him bay 'em! 

You can't train 'em to do this, he is a natural!!!

Catahoula Puppies For Sale And It Is That Time Of Year Again!

On and for the record, I have three litters of puppies for sale which are going out after the first of the year!

I will post pics of Cookies pups next...

Christmas is over, and deer season is soon to be finished too!

And this post explains why I am accused of being so "rude" on da phone to people I have never met, (actually just being honest, protective, and caring for da babies born in my yard) and why da 1st phone call is a good screen to disqualify most callers who just want to 'make them into a pet' and as usual "I" am often accused of being a 'hard' breeder "to do business with!" Yah you got dat RIGHT! Why? Simply put: because I am breeding hunting, personal protection, service and elite, high performance, WORKING dogs, and I am NOT breeding pets.

But... the irony is: the best working dogs are always a 'part' of the family and are usually the kids pet and personal protection, or simply your best friend, when it is not hunting season. Cur dogs, such Catahoula, Yellow Black Mouth, and Mountain Curs are so intelligent, sensitive and aware, even as little pups, that they are not only smarter than we think, 
THEY ARE SMARTER THAN US!

~ A Post Christmas Warning:

~ In about 4 to 12 weeks after Christmas we are going to be seeing folks put up the

   "We need to re-home our pet" posts and Craigs list ads. 

                  (The photo above was taken by a very responsible dog 'owner' 

                       who took their new pup on a hike in the Colorado Rockies, 

                              and had stopped for a break along the trail.)

~ These are the folks who purchased puppies as Christmas gifts who are suddenly allergic, moving, having a baby, don't have time, their kids won't take care of it, didn't think they'd get so big, etc...

~ To these people I say:

*You didn't know you had an allergy? oops. Don't let the pet suffer. Get allergy medicine.

*You're moving? what city are you moving to that doesn't allow dogs? Bullcrapville? find a house/ apartment / condo that will ALLOW your furry family member. PERIOD.

*Oh...you had no idea you were due to have a baby in 2 months? interesting. 

Get a dog trainer and suck it up, buttercup, you're a pet mom and a human mom now, millions deal with this daily and manage just fine and so will you, if you decide to, so just decide to do it.

*Don't have time for one 15 minute walk or to have a dog just sit next to you while you're home? really? 

~ So they're better off in a shelter than waiting in your house for you to get home? okaaay!!!....

~ get another dog to keep them company or find a solution that lets them stay in your home, it really isn't that difficult.

*Oh....you mean your 5 year old didn't step up to the plate to feed, walk, and scoop poop? 

~ And this surprised you? 

~ I guess it's time for you to step up and be the model of responsibility for your own child.

*Wrong Size? not cute as an adult? 

not quite the personality you expected?

 ~ look in a mirror... 

~ How'd you turn out?

 Should we send you back or make you homeless?

~ Grow the hell up, you chose to bring this puppy home, not the other way around....

but you can bet your ass "that dog" would lay down his life for you.. can you do the same for him or her?

~ I didn't make this post to offend anyone, but rather to open eyes... 

and take responsibility for those without a voice that had no choice in being a gift for Christmas.
